Foster carers needed in New Alresford
New Alresford had 5,344 residents at the 2021 Census, slightly fewer than it had in 2011. It is a Winchester district town about eight miles north east of the city, and South Coast Fostering covers it and the villages around it.
What do you need to be a foster carer?
A spare bedroom kept for the child. With a baby you can start with a crib in your own room, but the bedroom still has to be there for later.
Then time, and a car. New Alresford has no station and Winchester is eight miles down the road, so school transport, health appointments and contact sessions all come out of your own diary rather than somebody else’s.

A small town, and an old one
The housing needs assessment that New Alresford Town Council commissioned from AECOM, published in March 2025, found 32.1 per cent of residents aged 65 or over at the 2021 Census. It put the median house price at £477,500 in 2023, up 52 per cent since 2014, against average local incomes of about £51,900.
Read those two numbers together and you have the recruitment problem in one line. The spare rooms are here. The working-age families who might use them are finding it harder to buy here at all.
