What Is Long-Term Fostering?

Long-term fostering — sometimes referred to as permanent fostering — can feel like a big concept when you first hear about it. Some new carers are very clear that they would like to offer a long-term home. Others feel unsure. Both reactions are completely understandable.

It is important to know that long-term fostering does not happen quickly or by accident. A placement would only ever be agreed as long term after careful consideration, discussion and planning. We would only move towards a long-term match if it is something you genuinely want and feel ready for.

In practice, a placement is usually described as long term once it has been presented to and agreed by a local authority matching panel. At that stage, everyone — including you — agrees that you are able and willing to care for the child until they reach adulthood.

You will never be pressured into making a long-term commitment. You always have the final say about the placements you accept and the level of commitment you feel comfortable with. Our role is to guide and inform you, not to push you beyond your boundaries.

If you would like to understand more about how long-term fostering works, or whether it might be right for you, we would welcome a conversation. You can call us or use our online chat to ask any questions.
