Become a Baby Foster Carer in Southern England
Across Southern England, some babies are unable to remain with their birth families and need safe, nurturing foster homes. Baby fostering is a specialist and highly important role, providing stability and attentive care during the earliest and most vulnerable stage of a child’s life.
The babies we are asked to find homes for may need care for a short period while assessments and support work are undertaken with their parents. In some cases, babies remain in foster care for longer if the plan is for adoption or alternative long-term arrangements.
As a baby foster carer, you provide more than day-to-day care. You offer consistency, warmth and careful record-keeping during a crucial stage of development, helping professionals understand the child’s needs and ensuring they experience security from the very beginning.
We are currently recruiting baby-only foster carers across Southern England, including London, Brighton, Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Reading, Guildford, Oxford, Bristol and Swindon. If you feel you could provide a calm, stable home for a baby or toddler, we would welcome an informal conversation.
What Do You Need to Foster a Baby?
To foster a baby or toddler, you need to have the time and emotional availability to provide consistent, attentive care. Babies require round-the-clock nurturing, routine and stability, particularly in the early stages of a placement.
You do not need to have a spare bedroom at the start of the placement. A baby may initially sleep in a crib in your room. However, as they grow and depending on the care plan, they may later require their own bedroom, so it is important that your home can accommodate this if needed.
If you live in a more rural area, access to a car is essential. Baby foster carers are often required to take babies to contact sessions with their birth families, medical appointments and other professional meetings. In some situations, contact may take place several times a week, so flexibility and reliability are important.
Above all, baby fostering requires patience, resilience and the ability to work as part of a professional team supporting the child’s wider plan.
