Fostering Fortnight 2023 is just around the corner, and it offers a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness about the role that foster carers play in our society. South Coast Fostering is proud to be a part of this annual celebration. In this article, we will explore how you can get involved in this special event and learn what it means to be a foster carer.
The Importance of Foster Carers
Foster carers provide safe and nurturing homes for children who, for various reasons, cannot live with their birth families. At South Coast Fostering, our mission is to improve the lives of these vulnerable children and support them in reaching their potential. Fostering Fortnight 2023 is a testament to the amazing work foster carers do, and it’s our privilege to shine a spotlight on their dedication and love.
Different Types of Fostering
Fostering is not a one-size-fits-all solution. There are different types of fostering to cater to the diverse needs of children in care. Some of the main categories include emergency, short-term, long-term, respite, and specialist care.
Financial Support for Foster Carers
One of the most common questions we receive is about the financial support foster carers can expect. Foster carers receive an allowance to cover the costs of caring for a child in their home, as well as a payment for their skills and expertise. At SCF, we believe it’s essential that foster carers receive adequate financial support so they can provide the best possible care for the children they look after.
Who Can Foster?
Fostering is inclusive, and there’s no one-size-fits-all description of the perfect foster carer. People from all walks of life can become foster carers—single, married, divorced, or living with a partner—as long as they meet the key requirements, such as being over 21 years old and having a spare room.
Age Limit for Becoming a Foster Carer
While there’s no upper age limit, at SCF, we require applicants to be at least 21 years old.
Support from SCF
We provide comprehensive support for all our foster carers, including ongoing training, regular supervision, and access to a 24/7 helpline. We work collaboratively with our carers, ensuring that they have the necessary resources and guidance needed to thrive as foster parents.
