The fostering process

One step.
Then the next.

Becoming a foster carer is a considered process. We’ll explain it in plain English, help you prepare and make space for your questions.

Let’s talk about fostering No pressure. Just a conversation.

From curious to confident

What happens next?

  1. An informal conversation

Tell us a little about yourself and ask anything. We’ll talk about fostering, your circumstances and whether you would like to find out more.

  2. Get to know each other

We’ll discuss your home, your household and the kinds of care you could offer. This is also your chance to understand how we work.

  3. Apply, prepare and reflect

If you decide to apply, an assessing social worker will explore your experience, relationships and support network with you. Checks, references, a health assessment and preparation training are part of this stage.

  4. Panel and the decision

Your assessment goes to a fostering panel, which makes a recommendation. The agency’s decision maker then makes the approval decision. We’ll explain what to expect beforehand.

  5. Find the right match

Approval is the beginning of your fostering journey. We consider a child’s needs alongside your household, skills and approval, and talk through a possible placement with you.

How long does it take?

Expect a process measured in months, rather than weeks. Timing depends on your circumstances, checks, training and assessment.

We’ll discuss a realistic timetable with you and keep you informed as things progress.

Questions about assessment

We get to know the whole you.

Yes. Assessment explores your life, relationships and experiences, including difficult periods. Understanding how you respond to challenges helps us consider the support you and a child might need.

Yes. Fostering affects the people you live with, including children. Their views and needs are an important part of preparing for it.

We’ll discuss ages, types of fostering and the needs you could meet. Every potential match is considered carefully. Approval does not mean a child will be placed with you immediately.

A conversation, at your pace

You bring the questions.
We’ll bring the answers.

You don’t need to be ready to apply. A friendly conversation can help you work out your next step.

  1. We’ll listen to what brings you here.
  2. We’ll answer your questions honestly.
  3. You decide what happens next.

Usually 15–20 minutes. No pressure to apply.
